After doing some research into navigation systems I have found a definition to help clarify exactly what they are. A navigation system is usually a electronic system that aids in navigation. Navigation systems may be entirely on board a vehicle or vessel, or they may be located elsewhere and communicate via radio or other signals with a vehicle or vessel, or they may use a combination of these methods.

A classic example of a navigation system is the tomtom gps system. I have found that this navigation system is clear and easy to follow. Having the option of changing the accent of the person speaking also makes a good feature. It provides you with all the necessary information but is still easy to operate and follow.
Something I have notice looking a few different navigations systems is that the arrow symbol is quite evident. Showing direction and giving a clear visual message to the operator. I think using arrows to provide information is quite an essential part to building navigation system successfully.
All markings and labels are also clear and easy to understand which I think is also important making the stem user friendly and also means that anyone can use it.
Things like colour schemes are something that I ave also observed while doing some research. Most of the colour schemes are easy on the eye and the colour does not over power the image or text which is suppose to be the key thing. This allows the information to be communicated well.
