Project One: Final 25 Forms

In this project we were expected to explore the nature and extent of form by creating an adaptable system that enabled us to show extensive experimentation. In my project I have manipulated a set of lines, forming different compostions varying from squares, triangles and grids. I have used symmetry as a key component through out my forms. Other areas that I have focused on to create these forms are intersecting lines, chaos and enlargement. Overall I feel that my project shows a clear process and is quite systematic.

Project One: Adaptable Form Developement

Here are some of the images I created for my final series. This series was one a lot of fun to create. With this series i have experimented with the center point and changing the offsets so that they push in, up and down I really like the final image and how the lines go straight off the edge showing direction. I also like how at the bottom. i think this series it quite nice in the way it starts to form shapes within a shape.

Project One: Adaptable Form Development

These are some of the images which I have created for series four. I really enjoyed doing this lot as I am now understanding a lot more what it is that I am changing when putting in the offsets. From these images I will pick the best five to use in the final 25 for hand in. This series begins to look at deconstructing the form so that it then does the inverse and reconstructs. I think the one thing that I am a little unsure if I like or not is the lines coming out of the ends of the form. I did want to show direction but to some people it could come across like something that I did not really consider.

Here are some of the images I have created for the third series. From these images I am going to pick the 5 strongest to use as part of the final 25. In this series I have really explored stretching the points up and down and keeping everything symmetrical. I really like how you can see the squares transforming into triangles and then eventually rectangles that create this cross form but with a center piece in it.

Project One: Adaptable Form Development

Here are some of the images I created for the second series. In this series I have really focused on selecting points and stretching them in the opposite direction. From this it has created this grid which I think is quite nice because the grid isn't obvious to you in the starting point which I like.

Series Two:

Project One: Adaptable Form Developement

I have completed the first series of images which come from my orignal form. By creating variables I was able to make modifications to the orignal starting form. Below are a few of the development images from the series which I created. In this series I have focused on selecting particular points and stretching them out as far as they can go. I have also kept it symmetrical and chosen to do this because I like the balance that it shows overall.

Project One: Final Form Brainstorm

Here I have come up with a form which I would like to use for project one. I have brainstormed a whole lot of variations of the form which I will now choose from and use to make up the 25 iterations we have to do of the orignal form. Once I begin to make them in processing I am sure that they will change abit and I will come up with new things but for now I am trying to keep them simple so that I know that I will be able to achieve them in processing with none/little help. I have focused on rotation, repetition, reflection, gaps, breaking up and size when changing the orignal form to something new. I would quite like to experiment with the thickness of the line and filling in the shape/s to create even more variety. Once I get started I will experiment with black on white and white on black to see what looks more effective for my form.

Project One: MousePress Tool

In todays tutorial I learn't how to do something new in processing. I was introduced to the tool MousePress. This tool allows you to interact with what is on the screen. Every time you press on the screen with the mouse another form will appear adding to the overall image. I found this quite fun and I  liked the aesthetic that I got from using it. The geometric overlapping of shapes really appeals to me. Below I have what I manage to create, showing the start image and then the end image with a couple of images from in between.

Project One: Coding Practice in Processing

In todays lecture we began to learn the basics of coding and how to use it in the program Processing to create basic forms. We learnt the correct way to enter the code and what variables are. I found the jargon simple enough to follow. I just need more practice.

We had to draw a form at the beginning of the lesson and write a set of instructions to go with it. After being shown the basics in the program we got to try and make our form. Below is my form and set of instructions, along with the shapes I made in the program.

Code and result of the practice we did with the tutor:

We learnt how to draw a square and other line coming from it. Squares are quite simple to form once you understand how the variables work and what the different points indicate. I found it easier to draw a visual digram of the points and values so that I could follow that when working out the code.

My form and set of instruction:

After doing the practice with the Tutor I felt my form that I designed was abit to complicated for someone who was still learning but I gave it a shot anyway and just focused on learning how to draw  triangles in code.

My attempt of creating my form I designed:

This was not easy and I didn't manage to get much of my form created but I learnt a lot. Once the tutor explained to me how the code worked for the triangle I did that easily enough but when it came to the second triangle wanting to be joined to the first I wasn't sure what to do. I spent a lot of time with the tutors trying to resolve it and eventually we figured out how I would have to do it. I ran out of time to try it but I will try and finish it before next time.

Overall even though I don't have much to show I feel like I can do the basics and have a better understanding of code than what I did. Im really excited about getting better and making some really pretty moving pictures.

Project One: Open Processing: Inspiration

Open Processing is such an awesome site. I could spend hours on it looking at the different images. During class time I found some really cool ones that allowed you to interact with it and control what happens. I really liked that idea. Unfortunately I can't find the ones that I liked from class time but I have found some others when I think are pretty cool too.

Click on each image and it will link it to the site.
Snake Painter

I love to doodle on everything and I really enjoy the snake gane so the tittle of this image grab my attention straight away. I think it has a really nice aesthetic to it once you have drawn something on the screen. I like how we control was is shown and how thick we want the lines to be.

Spiral Starburst

Bright colours are my weakness. I love the combination of colours and movement that is created on the screen. I get such a buzz out of looking at this image because after awhile you don't know where to look. It is abit of a colourful illusion. So fun!

Rainbow Waves

I like this image for the movement that it has on the screen. I like all the lines that make up this image and how they all interlock. I think it has such a pretty aesthetic and quite a delicate, somewhat peaceful presence and movement about it.  Its very easy going on your eyes yet still takes you for a ride. I love the colours and organic shape that it creates.

Wavy Gravy

Wavy Gravy what a name. I picked this image for its name, it's so quirky. Of course I love the colours. I think it is quite effective how the image comes onto the screen in parts by itself but we can also use the mouse to create circles on the screen at the same time. I like that combination of us interacting with the image as well as it being done for us. The layering is so beautiful in the image, creating a sense of movement. Just stunning.

Project One: Sketch Transformation

In todays lecture we looked at having a simple shape and then repeating it using different techniques to create a new variety of that shape.

Below are two different shapes which I used to create 5 more different versions of it. the techniques I used were:
The starting image.
Changing the placement.
Repeating the shape.
Rotating the shape.
Enlarging the shape.
Changing the thickness of lines.

Project One: Practicing Basic Code Principals

In todays Studio we were given the task of picking an object from our bags and then writing a set of instructions which others in our group would read and follow to draw that object.

The object I chose was Lucas Pawpaw Ointment. The group did pretty well at drawing what I had written in the instructions. The reason why the drawings did not exactly look like the actual object is because my instructions weren't exact enough and did not represent the object enough. If I was to do it again I would break the object down into parts and have seperate set of instructions. Firstly beginning with a set of instructions that outlines the basic shape and then a new set of instructions which covers the details more and instructions to remove existing parts creating the actual shape you are wanting. For example instructions for drawing a cylinder and then a new set of instructions telling you to alter pieces to create curves in the sides of the cylinder. Overall I have learnt that it is important to start off with basic shapes and then give instructions which allows the person to alter the drawing. This gives a clearer and more exact process for someone to follow.
